Lady Gaga’s Poker Face Lyrics—More Than About the Muffin

The idea of a poker face or façade is certainly not lost on Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, who has probably had to hold her heart back a number of times, considering her upbringing.  Gaga was raised Roman Catholic and actually attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York.  Musically speaking she was gifted and wrote her first piano ballad at the age of 13.  She was performing in front of audiences by the age of 14. 

She has stated before that her family was from a lower-class economy, and thus she had to work for her fame by starting out in high school musicals and by writing music theses in college.  Even in college she states that she was frequently made fun of by other students for her provocative manners and fashion and for her eccentric personality.  She left college by the second semester of her sophomore year to focus on making it as a singer.  She made a deal with her father that he would pay her rent for a year if she returned to college after her presumable failure.  Who knew at the time Poker Face lyrics would one day be all over the Internet?

Gaga states in order to follow her dreams she had to leave her family, find a cheap apartment, and eat “sh__ until somebody would listen.”  She got her start at age 19 by signing with Def Jam Recordings but was later dropped.  Eventually she collaborated with RedOne and worked with Grandmaster Melle Mel and some friends of hers who formed the Stefani Germanotta Band.  It was during her New York underground music years that she experimented with drugs, sex and experimental rock and roll.

The name Gaga actually comes from music producer Rob Fusari, who compared her voice to Freddie Mercury and the Queen song Radio Ga Ga.   Eventually she signed with Streamline Records, and worked on other talent’s songs.  It was only when she was discovered by Akon that she truly arrived in the music world with her album “The Fame”, including Just Dance and Poker Face.  The lyrics were heard on millions of computers all over the world, as the new technology of the day—the online MP3—was transforming the industry.
